about
ANNAPOLIS Royal
The earliest permanent European settlement, in what became Atlantic Canada, Annapolis Royal was established by French fur traders as Port Royal, in 1604. It was a major shipping port for wood, fish, and agricultural products until the 1980's. Its French, and later English fort, Fort Anne, became the first National Park of Canada in 1917. The Bay of Fundy shore and the Annapolis River define the northern portion of Annapolis County. Maritime culture has been central to life here for generations, and helps to define the identity of this part of Nova Scotia.
History of the Maritime culture project: fundy boatworks
A donated schooner keel and frame formed the basis for a pilot project in 2016, for which the Town of Annapolis Royal bought rough lumber and paid for boatwrights. This activity on Annapolis Royal's waterfront attracted many enthusiastic visitors and volunteers, and generated ideas for maritime activities, demonstrations and workshops. The Town of Annapolis Royal has been planking this tiny schooner during Summer 2017. Visitors and locals alike have been thrilled to see boat building happening on the Annapolis Royal Waterfront again!

At the O'Dell House Museum in Annapolis Royal we are running an exhibit which began June 25th and will continue through October 27th. This exhibit is a public presentation of what we have been learning about boat building. We focus on vessels that were either built, or active to some significant degree, in Annapolis County. We feature photography by Dan Froese and update the exhibit as new items come in. We have just launched an additional room of 'Flotsam and Jetsam', or the last traces left from the Age of Sail .
At the museum you can see share some of what we have learned; we are compiling a binder of photographs of wharves, both modern and contemporary and also a binder of all the known, named vessels we have photographs of. In addition to these two image binders you can also find our “Compendium of Vessels” on this website under the heading Vessels as well as printed in a binder at the O'Dell House Museum. We publish newsletters which you can find in “Fundy Boats” stands around the County, including at the Annapolis Royal Haul-Up Association.

ART of the FUNDY ART SHOW At ARTsPLACE Gallery
25th June – 24th July, 2017
Since this project was founded by the Annapolis Region Community Arts Council in partnership with the Annapolis Heritage Society, it was important for us to acknowledge the ways our Maritime culture has been expressed through art. we put together a show of "fundy art" inspired by the Bay and area. This body of water is central to life and livelihood for a diverse range of people, including artists, who have found it the inspiration for many art forms. Our idea of “Fundy Art” was anything created or altered creatively, with a nautical connection. With the Bay of Fundy as our muse we collected an exhibit that included; paintings, sculpture, seaglass, driftwood, textile and rug-work, jewelry, photography and ink drawings.
